Many talented students wish to study abroad on scholarship for their master and PhD research. Unfortunately most of them do not know how to present their case strong. Here few tips for your guideless. Formerely I have helped many students and happy to share that most of them are now abroad and few are waiting for the coming September 2012. Below you can read some guidelines.
1. There are certain fellowships which are not formally advertised so you have to take steps for them. South Korea is a country where you can have your PhD in future. Most of the students ask their fellows (already in S. Korea) to talk for them to the professors. It’s not a recommended way so avoid this. Luckily you can have success but there will be a large gap among you and your professor. Secondly, when you been there, so there is a chance that you may not find yourself appropriate to the research or lab. Third, it’s gives you a negative impression. The correct way is to university websites via internet, excess the exact lab and write to the professor personally. (How and what you will write, is discussed below). If s/he is agreeing to heir you then talk him for your monthly stipend and tuition fee. Normally they give 600-1000 US Dollar in stipend.
2. If you find any advertised fellowship, then check the deadline. Normally you will have two months for apply. Before formal apply, open webpage of the concerned school and check the running research projects. Write to the professor personally for an acceptance letter, and mention him that I am interested in your lab. If you find some acceptance in advance then attach it also with your application materials. If his reply is like that “We are not supposed to issue any acceptance letter, you apply then we will examine you application materials”. If acceptance letter is not there, then do not apply with blind eyes. Take care of your research proposal. I mean prepare your research proposal according to the lab in which you are interested. For that the positive and strong idea is that you should download some of his recent research papers and prepare a decent research proposal. If you want to use any research proposal or want to take from your friend so it’s not a good way and you are making your case weak.
3. In certain scholarships you will need an acceptance letter for you PhD before apply, e.g., Chinese Government Scholarship and TWAS.
4. Another question is that what are those materials in your application materials which will decide your success? They are, reference letters, personal statement and research proposal. These documents weights for about 95%. For reference letters, try to take them from high ranked peoples like professors or associate ones. It is also must to close them in a sealed envelope having signatures of the concerned personals. In personal statement, make it clear that my intentions are to do quality research and international community. Do not blame your current department or any agency of you country. Do not mention that I know each and every thing. Regarding research proposal, it should be matched to the lab research in which you are interested otherwise I suggest do not apply then.
5. What is the way to contact professors? Write them email, mention your name and country name in the subject line. Maximum in three sentences introduce yourself and immediately write him that I am interested in your lab with one or two small reasons. Wind up your email and in last sentence write him to find my CV in attached documents. Attach your updated CV with the email.
6. If the professor is interested he will email you. Pick his email, because if he is emailing you it means s/he is evaluating you. So answer him clearly.
