How To Take Good Score In Gre/gat Of Nts
What is GRE? I will not discuss such stuffs here, as everyone is familiar with this topic.But I must share a very beautiful definition of my all times friend Mr.Mubarak Ali (wadan), nowadays a PhD student in Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad.“GRE stands for Graduate Record Examination, so it means that what you learned from childhood to graduation is tested here and it is impossible to cover all the 14 years study in a few days”.The higher education system of Pakistan is very clear and straight forward in a sense, if your GRE is clear then you are able to apply for M.Phil or Ph.D study, otherwise you are not eligible to most of the universities.I am writing some tips and guidelines for preparation.
You all know GRE has three sections of analytical reasoning, English and Mathematics with total of 100 MCQ’s and time is 120 minutes.
1.Which Section To Solve First?
Cat A: I know most of the peoples attain mathematics first (because they are best in Mathematics), followed by English (because somehow they are good in English) and Analytical reasoning in last (because they believe in guesses).Cat B: Some will attempt English in the start and Mathematics the second.Cat C: Very less will attempt analytical in the start.It is obvious that you must score well in two sections to pass.
Avoid Cat A in attempt, because this way use much of your time of thinking that want to take 30/30 in Mathematics, but I suggest you Cat C the most with some other precautions (will be discussed in time management section below).
2.Which Book and How to Prepare for GRE:
Most of the students use a book published by NTS, having some questions.But believe me that book is totally for business stuff so I suggest do not buy or accept it as a gift from your friend.I suggest you one book, named BIG BOOK.It is available in every city of Pakistan and very cheap too.This book contains about 50 tests, so you need to solve only 4 or 5 test (especially analytical section).If you are zero in Mathematics then revise chapters of ratio and proportions, trigonometry, basics of algebra, profit and loss.I missed the percentages in chapters because pay attention to the following three questions.
(1).What percent of 20 is 4? (2).10 percent of 20 is? (3).4 is 20 percent of?
If you can solve the above three questions, then no need to study the whole chapter.
3.Time Management:
The most important to have marks is to attempt strictly with managed timings.I suggest you go for Cat C starting from the analytical section, utilize 60 minutes on this section.At least you will be able to attempt 24-26 questions in one hour.Make blind guess for the rest 3 or 4 because compromise on time is not allowed (this method is for those who solved at least 90 questions in BIG BOOK during 2 days preparation).Now come to Mathematics section, utilize 40 minutes here strictly.In first 15 minutes you can tick the straight forward one’s the remaining will take 25 minutes.You have 20 minutes lift and 40 questions.In ten minutes you can tick all the synonyms, antonyms and analogies.Do not waste your time on a long paragraph only for two questions.
4.Beauty of BIG BOOK:
I am not against the traditional book of NTS, but I found that BIG BOOK has a tremendous beauty and it develops your skills.The answers are not explained like NTS book in BIG BOOK, so one will develops its own tactics to solve analytical reasoning questions.Once you develop your own way, then you will enjoy attempting this section.
Frankly speaking, try this way of time management with little practice on BIG BOOK.I must add one caution in the end, if you are zero in English and math then you can pass it with prayers not with these tactics.I have the one friend and he cleared it I think on 16th time because of the above reason.I do not want to mention his name because of his publicity.Allah Bless You All.Ameen
